The Last of a Candle

by Shane   Mar 15, 2007

I recall that day in November
You held a ladder out for me
As I ascended, I fondly remember
The unspoken promise
Like a vanished reverie

The present would show
Where my path led
As I descended, you know
You betrayed with a kiss
And dissolved instead

Any cavity, doubt to come
Alone, this crucible could dismember
Kindled by your kiss undone
Alas, I knew my fate
This bitter surrender

The flames hold no splendor
The warmth, those eyes
The frost of November
Could it melt, condense
Like familiar ties?

Farewell, farewell the last ember.
