In Memory of JR Hughes

by NashvilleBlues   Mar 21, 2007

There is nothing anyone can say
To make the pain go away
People live, people die
But why, Lord, do we have to cry?

A life so new
Why you took it, we have no clue.
A young boy, barely a teen
Who lived a life, happy and serene.

I did not know this boy
But he meant a lot, for today there is no joy.
God has a reason, God has a plan,
But why would he take a bright young man?

As I sat there in school today,
I felt no joy, there was no air.
Young kids should not face this,
The horrible pain of a student forever missed.

In this community we ask-why us?
This has happened way too much.
First a horrific tragedy,
Now in the freshman class, there is a cavity.

I have a younger brother,
Barely a teen, still depends on his mother.
Why would God take someone my brother's age?
I ask myself in growing rage.

It's a sad thing that death teaches us things,
To reach out to others, and spread our wings.
It is time to appreciate my little brother,
Yes the pesky one from the same mother.

I don't know what I would do
If it was him, a part of me I would lose.
I need to embrace him:
Tell him that I love him.

I need to treat him as my friend
Be there when he needs me, and a hand I would lend.
The Steven Hughes,
I hardly know you.

Every night I will pray
Hoping it gets easier with each passing day.
It's hard to believe you will smile again.
Just think of the memories, and let yourself grin.

Just remember, you are not alone.
People love you and won't let you be on your own.
You will probably never read this,
You probably don't even know that I exist.

In this school, we share the pain
The loss of a loved one, strength we will gain
Today we sit in silence, a day so sad.
Why does everything we go through have to be so bad?

This is a day when everyone's depressed
But how, God, can this be for the best?
A lost one, gone forever,
The impact he had: unimaginable.
