Praying,Hoping,Wishing

by anushka ramroop   May 24, 2007

The little girl sits huddled in a corner,
Alone, afraid,
Praying, hoping, wishing for night not to come,
She now lies on her bed,
The covers drawn up to her chin,
She lies their shivering not from the cold,
But rather terrified of what is to happen...

The click of the door opening renders her motionless,
A small stream of light filters into the room,
And she knows she is no longer safe,
The dominating presence standing in the doorway makes her realize,
Her prayers have not been answered,
The stranger quietly closes the door behind him,
And like a tiger hunting his prey,
He stalks to the tiny wooden bed.

"Gracie honey are you asleep?" the stranger whispers,
While he slowly lifts the sheet and slips in beside the eight year old child,
He gently strokes her hair,
Marveling at the feel of her soft curls that caress her innocent face,
Little Gracie lies their motionless feigning sleep,
Not saying anything,
Praying, hoping, wishing that it would all be over soon,

Her heart cries out," Please Stop,"
But no one is listening to the sobs a little girl,
Her mother's snore can be heard through the paper thin wall
But she is unaware that her boyfriend no longer sleeps next to her throughout the entire night,
The mother so tired after work,
Never realizes that her boyfriend comes to sleep after one in the morning,
And Gracie's bachelor bed always holds two.
