Cherished-
the soft exclamation of you
caught on the edge of a sigh,
the whispered, spontaneous declaration of love-
even if I remember nothing else-
if, in a decade I can no longer remember
a single other moment,
I cannot believe that I will ever forget those words,
clear and solitary in a world of smoke and shadow,
escaping from your lips
in the obscurity of our blessed night.
