Poverty

by helen   Jul 18, 2007

Alone in the dark...
Lies an invisible soul
Not worthy for your sympathy
Not worthy for your kindness

Pushed into a corner
Away from the world
Lies a helpless individual
Trapped in a world of cruelty

A waste of space in society
A waste of precious air
Too insignificant to receive our respect
Too worthless to accept our money

Don't they know?
Our lives are worth more than theres

Don't they know?
A $1000 jacket we ware once
Is worth more than feeding the hungry

Don't they know?
That our pathetic lives are in more need then theirs

I know...
Were too self indulged in our own lives.
To see a begging hand is waving,
in our proud and selfish faces.

Some know...
That a nobody begging on the street,
has no one to blame but them selves

Some know...
Everyone is equal
Despite their race & color
Despite their religion and beliefs
Despite their social status

But you know...

Who cares about them...
Who cares if theyre suffering...
Who cares if they die...
its not my problem...

Be careful on what you preach
You never know...

One day...

That nobody might be you

    Hello.
I really liked the "punch" line on the end. A very true statement. This was different to most poems I have read, being that it was very political. I enjoyed it none the less.
    Well done.
