Open Your Eyes

by Viola   Sep 6, 2007

We're all just living scripted lives
Drowned in insecurities
Holding on to fake promises
Excepting intricate lies
Because we just don't think we can do any better
We are reaching, not for our own goals
But ones others have set for us
We're crumbling with guilt
Because the inabilities of others
To see potential in us
To offer forgiveness
Or lend a helping hand
We're coming undone
And the thoughts put in our minds
Are ones of a twisted reality
That always seems to release negativity
Instead of hope and strength
"I'm never going to be good enough" she says
As she stares at the pages of a magazine
So she starves herself, and tries to fit in
When at the same time, a boy across town
Joins a gang, because in his eyes, it's the only way
That will make him feel like a man
There's a brutal tunnel
That only goes in deeper, if you let it
Until darkness is the only thing around
But the night shall last no longer
Don't allow yourself to be blinded
When the morning light comes--
Open your eyes..

** this poem is about how teenagers get influenced by the media..and think they have to live a certain way and meet certain standards in order to fit into the world..and also breaking free of this.
