Broken Hearts

by Resplendant Rose   Oct 31, 2007

What is it that causes a heart to break?
Against all better judgment you give in
to pleas you hear in your soul and mind
and you give yourself away to your love
trusting the whole way they will keep you safe
your heart lying helpless in someone's hands
no more protected than a thornless rose
strong but tender, like a new sapling tree
driving up through the surface to be known
growing within you until you might burst
the ecstacy of shared love overwhelms
like an overfed flood breaking through a dam
and shines within you like a storm beacon

Then darkness covers as the light goes out
the tide subsides to expose the damage
you plummet from that incredible high
and you find that your heart did really break
like a sapling tree trod on before it's time
fallen to the ground, splintered to pieces
once strong, now only weakness will remain
the thornless rose with no defenses, killed
the once protective hands now only squeeze
and all your sad hopeless prayers, unanswered
you try to mend your crushed imperfect soul
but all you can find is tiny pieces
you hide yourself away now to repair
all that sadness within, try to rebuild
