Somalia's Sorrow

by Laura Lamarca   Nov 18, 2007

Hijackers tangle with
military's fate, waiting in waters
for profit's gain, slain soldiers
suffer in food chain's melee
of might, fighting to survive
a new day...another night.

Muskets miscarried to
satellite communications,
wielding AK-47's in piracy heaven,
as territorial waters become
unhinged and singed
finances fail to secure.

Impoverished and weak,
governments seek answers in
shipping lanes where fright
remains 'mid fertile
fortune of unfortunate souls
foraging food for kin.

Clambering aboard to look, on
hooks and ladders that lead
to hope of every hour,
devouring resources to feed
vacant guts, awash
in the land of displacement

as U.S. strikes through air,
despairing insurgents
of al-Quaida's fight...

and diseased existence fades
in extremists' flight of fancy,
poking poverty's remnants
as Somalia resides in fear.
