To my sunshine

by Miranda   Jan 3, 2008

You are more like the name I gave you than you know.
The promise of your arrival brings me hope and excitement
Your appearance bathes me in warmth and surrounds me in the light that is you
Such joy you bring to me. Like the sun banishing the rain clouds, you chase my sadness away
But then, you are gone. Darkness and loneliness return.
Not even a moon or a distant star to keep me company. Just the rain.
The sun may burn my skin, but I feel your burn on my soul
It is has become a crater, and never completely heals.
For all your beauty and good you bring to my life, you bring pain.
I see the sun, I feel the sun, but it, like you, is unattainable
I can no more harness its power than I can claim your heart as my own.
So how is it...that you have mine?
I go so long without seeing you, I always wonder if you will return
But, while not as consistently as your namesake, you always do rise again.
And for a brief time, bliss returns, and misery is forgotten.
How is it, why is it that it hurts so much to live with you, but I know I cannot live without you?
There is no sunscreen to protect my heart from you Sunshine of mine.
There is hope for me. A small, ever growing hope to be born out of the wreckage
A storm wrought while you were away. A little star to shine in my dark heavens
To keep me company. So I won’t need you anymore..
As a part of me and a part of the rain, it will put out the embers that lie smoldering in my heart.
