The Pebble

by Molly May   Jan 7, 2008

A pebble tossed towards the water
Dropped as if it didn't mean a thing
Down it goes
Falling faster and faster
Sooner or later its descent will stop
Its impact shattering the silence
But who knew what an impact such a
Small pebble would have in such a
Vast Puddle

There's nothing else around
Just me and the puddle

My rain boots have turned into a
Lighthouse
A warning
sharp objects
Keep out of reach of small children
But they refuse to listen

They raise their sails in hope of land
Instead finding
Rusty nails and
Broken chains
This little toy trike has already been
Used

Alice in Wonderland and her
Magical Mushrooms
These tears begin to drown the world
Or at least the captains and their crews
Trying to find a harbor in a port of
Jagged rocks

I don't know how I got here with these
Four walls of water
They forgot to hinge a door
Or did they just add a window and
Open it all the way?

The air has a bad case of A.D.D.
The wind whips my hair across my face
Straightening what little curl I had left

Poor little captains
Don't loose your hats
I see your men quietly struggling
Ants trying to keep a matchbox afloat
I know how they feel

Ships going down
Sinking to meet their maker
And not the trees from which they came from
The Big Guy Upstairs
The one that holds the map

Wait!
They don't love you the way I love you
So pack up
Don't stray
Oh say say say

You turn
You go
But here I am
In the middle of a puddle
Meddling with things when i should be
On a shuttle
Or maybe an escalator all the way to the
Moon

The stars dancing all around
If we sit still and quiet they may
Stop for a visit
But only if you bring your
Dance tunes they hear you playing late at night
when you sit all alone in your room

Lights off
Window open
Gaze locked on the
Cheshire cat's silly little grin

But you painted the roses red and
Here we are
This ocean of a puddle

I used to look down and see a
Glittering face with a
Glowing smile
Happiness radiating from every
Watery glimmer

But that was before the clouds
Before the storm and
Before the pebble was tossed to wards the water
Dropped as if it didn't mean a thing
Down it went
Falling faster and faster
The descent finally stopping
Its impact shattering the silence

My yellow boots are no longer a
Lighthouse
Ships no longer ram into rocks
Captains no longer shout commands
Crews no longer hang on for dear life

For life is dear
Not to be wasted on things that do not
Impact the puddle
The mirror is no longer clear

The glimmering face with the
Glowing smile is
Gone
Vanished
Kaput
A mouse into a hole
A child under the blankets

I wish i could sit
My legs are growing awfully tired
No one here to hold me up as my knees begin to
Sink into the sand

This ocean of a puddle is
Not really an ocean
It is just a little puddle and
I am just a little girl with
aching legs
Tired of all this standing
Confused by all this waiting

The wind has run off
The sailors quickly chasing after
But the clouds remain
Blocking any light from returning

My gaze drops to the murky water at my
Feet
This reflection is fading
To the brink of unrecognition

My eyes are searching for a returning light
But I have lost its sight
it continues to drown
Down down it goes

Just like the pebble that
Started it all
