To Make Her Heart Smile Again

by Viola   Feb 1, 2008

The lazy colors of winter sprawl themselves in the distance
This isn't the best sight but you won't stop staring
Somewhere out there you're looking for meaning
Or maybe you're just waiting for an answer
I don't understand why the world painted your heart
In layers of grey over and over again
I wish I could peal them off to reveal that vivid red hiding underneath
I know you're capable of so much more than this
But the pain took a toll way before you had the chance to try
I've watched you slowly winding down for years
This isn't an easy thing to admit
And God knows we won't find a way out of the labyrinth
Until we finally bid our time in this place
But I got my hopes up that you'd let me hear your story
You tell me bits and pieces, narrated under the dark moonlight hours
Or whispered in the halls as we move through time
I've watched you cry and laugh
And the sound of it terrifies my heart
How familiar it rings in my ears
Almost like those songs we used to listen to together
You lying on the floor with your head resting on your arm
And me sitting on the wooden bed until the time came
Everything else empty- all packed up
We spend our final moments in that place
Singing along to songs that unleashed emotions
Which signaled the heart to squeeze tight in pain
And release the most beautiful of tears
I do happen to remember so many unsystematic times
Times we spend just finding a way through each other
Memories are piled like building blocks
And when everything else fails love
I hope you remember- that's what you have to count on
So don't let me down this time, please
Tell me it is in the darkest of hours
That love will make your heart smile
