    loving the new HM's awards,

Plus good to see the win icons back.

We all love a slap on the back

(and a dodgy shirt judging by some recent pics/posts)

    I had a question.
Previously, when we went to a poet's profile, we could see the category a poem belonged to, since it was mentioned there along with the poems... Now even when we click on the poem, I don't think we come to know of it. It felt much easier then.
I was wondering if it will remain like this. I mean, it isn't a problem. Just wanted to know?

I've noticed that too, Shruti. I'll bring it up with Janis.

Can anyone tell me what happens with the dislike button? Or should I find a poem by xxxKrystalxRedxTearsxFromxMyxHeartxTonitexxx and find out for myself?

  • Mr. Darcy

Poem drafts - this is a good addition, but can this feature be tweaked so a member can see what the poem will look like when its finally posted?

Also, any news on funky formatting to make our poems more visually pleasing?

  • Larry Chamberlin replied to abracadabra
7 years ago, updated 7 years ago

Only the result of the "like" button is displayed; it is also used for various ranking criteria.

The "dislike" is recorded only to your own account to help (along with your "likes") in suggesting poems you may want to read.

  • Larry Chamberlin replied to Mr. Darcy

Michael, good idea. We'll ask Janis to add a Preview option

Don't hold your breath for funky formatting - it's stage 4 priority.

The poem drafts addition is excellent, and something I can see myself using a lot. Much of my poetry, I just write and post and often feel it would benefit from editing.
The site as a whole is coming on in leaps and bounds now.

It seems that the major glitches have been dealt with, leaving Janis time to actually implement the new features.

  • Shruti

Umm, I had 19 poemns here, and yesterday I submitted another one. But the figure didn't change into 20. It still shows 19 in my profile.
So...did this happen with anyone else too? Or...something's wrong with my profile only...I guess?

  • Larry Chamberlin replied to Shruti

I see you have 20 poems with only 19 shown on your profile.
In the old site some things, perhaps this, had to wait until the site recycled. I will check with Janis.

Are message received and sent DATES going to be added to the messages in our sent and out boxes, as with no dates currently showing on incoming or outgoing messages, it is quite difficult to work out when messages were received or sent out?
    Thanks!

Question if this is a new (kinda) site how come the emojis STILL don't work? For real lol I tend to say the wrong thing but I'm curious

  • silvershoes replied to -Choke-On-MY-Halo-
    7 years ago

You do not tend to say the wrong thing! I hadn't even thought about emojis. Interesting. I'm not sure if they'd add something to the site and make it seem more modern or if it would somehow seem inappropriate for a writers' community.
    What do other people think?

I asked Janis about it since it's relatively straightforward to implement before the site migration, and we were testing out the new site. He shares the opinion that it seems inappropriate for the site.

Still, if other people are interested in having it, we can bring it up with him again, or reach some sort of compromise with him? That it's fine on anywhere that it isn't a poem/quote so messages & forums? Thoughts?

  • Hellon replied to hiraeth

I don't think they'd look good on a poem and I think they would become annoying in the forums. Maybe on private messages? I could easily live without them to be honest.

  • Maple Tree

I agree with Janis and with Hellon...This is a poetry site...Just inappropriate...

  • Ben Pickard

    I have to agree.

I wouldn't mind some basic emoticons in the forums or the private messages or in the poems. If there are a lot of emoticons, people can misused them or used them as substitutes for writing in English.

Though, I still can and have use the symbols when I want to include them in a poem or the forums or the Messages, that's why I don't feel they are a necessity. However, I wouldn't mind if they were available. Nor do I see them as inappropriate. :D

What I truly miss is the views that each poem received. Without them, pnq doesn't feel the same (at least to me). It feels too cold for my finger bones to type. I can feel them shivered with each struck on the keyboard. I would be happy if there were no awards or win tags or hms tags if only the poems showed the views each poem received.

It made me feel like I was being read even if the only one who have viewed the poem was me (yup, the mind is a tricky thing). I mean even if I received no comments nor votes, by seeing the number of views, it cheered me up.

I may sound dilusional but that view count made me feel like it was worth posting my poems...

    *sigh*

Does anyone know if the views would be implemented some day?

  • silvershoes replied to Everlasting

I'm not sure why the view count isn't already implemented. I'm sure Janis just didn't think of it with the site change. He is taking a month off from work on the site, but if you can wait a month, I'm sure it would be very easy for him to add this feature back.

So I'm back with another off the wall question, sorry:

Is there a reason the what's new only has 5 pages as opposed to the old infinite set? I really miss being able to sift through endless pieces my favorite authors commented on.

  • Larry Chamberlin replied to BlueJay

I am guessing it's just a matter of coding. Will check with Janis

  • Hellon
7 years ago, updated 7 years ago

I guess Janis never got around to answering my original question about how the popular poems/quotes are selected. I've also noticed the most popular poets list is strange too. Some members haven't signed in for years and even the P&Q Mod account appears on the second page although there are no poems posted on the account...weird!

    EDIT

Also...what happened to the search topics option?

  • Larry Chamberlin replied to Hellon
7 years ago, updated 7 years ago

No, he has not shared the algorithm for either the popular poems or poets. However, since the PnQ Mod account shows up that indicates that PMs factor into the equation.

When he gets back next month Janis will be working on the search options. One idea is to eliminate categories per se and instead allow the author to use tags instead, with several tags being allowed. If the tags don't show up on the list, the author may be allowed to set up their own tag.

Just wondered what the rules are for nominating poems now that the site has been updated? I always thought that a poem was eligible for up to one week after it was posted but, twice now I've gone to nominated a poem that's three days old and find the nomination button is not there. Each time the poem has been posted when the nominations are frozen and when I get my votes back and then go to nominate the button is not there ...is this a temporary thing that Janis needs to fix or what?

  • Hellon

So I've just found a poem that was posted on the same date as the one I wanted to nominate...it's in the love category as is the one mentioned but it has the nomination button against it. Any ideas why one has and one hasn't?

  • Naughtymouse replied to Hellon

I found this too, frustrating as hell.

  • hiraeth replied to Hellon

Can you post a link the poems in question?

From Saturday 10am EST - > Monday 10am EST (about the time the site updates the winners), nominations are disabled. A poem is eligible the contest if it was submitted 1 week prior to the contest, I'm not sure if that includes edge cases, like poems being posted late friday night to early monday morning though.

  • Hellon replied to hiraeth

Both poems were posted on 25th March which was Saturday when the nominations were disabled. I tried to nominate on Tuesday...that's when the site updates the winners and I get my votes back here in Australia and the nomination button wasn't on the poem I wanted to nominate but I found it was there on the other poem. The author tried moving the poem to another category thinking that there was still a problem with the love section, although both poems were posted there, but that still didn't work. It just seems a bit random that one poem has missed out due to a possible gliche that the mods are unaware of.
