Pit Bull Ban--Agree Or Not?

Pit bulls are going to be banned in Ontario, and I was just wondering what people thought of that.

--The ban is effective as of Monday.
--The ban makes it illegal to own, breed, transfer, abandon, or import pit bulls.
--Pit bulls owned before August 29th, or born in the next 90 days, are "restricted" and can stay in Ontario, but must be leashed and muzzled in public and sterilized.
--Puppies born after November 27 will be considered illegal, and must be shipped out of the province, sent to a research facility, or destroyed.
--Those who violate the ban can have their pit bulls seized and destroyed. The owner of a dog deemed dangerous, regardless of breed, is subject to fines of 10,000 and a jail term of up to six months.

"The owner of a dog deemed dangerous ...."

That could cover a long list of breeds. Under certain conditions, most dogs are capable of being dangerous. And what about mutts that are part pit bull?

Thats gross. The puppies must be destroyed. Thats so sad! Or sent to research. Thats gross.

Yes, please keep your dogs on leashes! I'm tired of being chased down by em.

Also something should be done about the stray ones. I have at least 5 dogs running around in my nieghborhood. They knock down the trash cans and go through my mail box looking for food. Those dogs are the ones people should be worried about...lmao

Some would say that they are a threat to public safety. Pit Bulls seem to have this one little nasty propensity for attacking small children and other pets and then maulung, biting and tearing them to pieces. Other than that they are fine dogs.

Ever imagine WHY they attack people in the first place? Hmmmm maybe they were TRAINED?

ANY dog can be trained to be vicious, to fight other dogs, to attack other animals and humans. Just because pit bulls are the common breed to attack doesn't mean it's the only animal alive that can tear a little kid or an old man apart.

Bleah...i used to have a pit bull/lab mix and he was trained to fight in dog rings, so maybe i feel too emotionally attatched to this subject...lol

    My puppy. :'(

Okay good, I thought I was the only one who thought they are stupid for banning them.

    That's just crazy!!
There are 2 pits just down the alley from me & I pet them every day when I walk by. They are just precious.
I do agree that dogs should be on a leash. I also think that ANY dog COULD attack .
We have 2 boxers, our male is very protective & our female is quickly becoming that way. (we have only had her about 1 month) I am VERY sure if they thought someone was threatening any one of us they would attack.
I don't think it is right to ban any one breed of dog. Each dog has it's own personality.

    ok enforce a leash law
but banning a breed is genocide
    its horrible
    stupid too...

I think there is a reason why Pit Bulls are generally chosen as the breed that gets trained to fight. They already have a predisposition to fight that is usually stronger than other breeds. They also have the capability to inflict great harm with their tremendous jaw strength and their tenacity.

I'm not convinced that a law totally banning one breed is the best solution. Not every Pit Bull is dangerous. But the overall risk of attack and injury from Pit Bulls is statistically greater than with other breeds and should be recognized as such.

i think that not all pitt-bulls are dangerous. i think it is how you raise them. this topic is personal to me, b/c last January my son was bit by a pit bull. he was only 7 at the time. the owners took the (poor) dog and shot it and threw it in the river, before any type of rabis(?) test could be done, so my child had to suffer the excrutiating pain of having rabis shots given to hjim. i think it would have been unneccessary, but in my state you have to have proof of rabi's vaccination in incedent of a bite by a pitt bull. the owners instead panicked and shot the poor dog and threw it in the ( local) river. i never pressed charges, but apparently, the State does.

I was bitten by a pit when I was 17. It wasn't the dog's fault, he was running loose...that is the fault of the owner. Had this dog been on a leash, he couldn't have bitten me.
How about they ban people who don't take care of their dogs properly from having them instead of banning the dogs.

i think its bs ! people look at pits as horrible animals and they're not. some might be a bit aggresive bit so can a little bitty dog. i have a pit bull and people are scared to walk around him, they look at me like wtf and i just smile cause hes the sweetest dog. my pit bull wouldnt hurt a fly might chase em but wouldnt even hurt it... i have 4 kittens in my house and they are more aggresive then he is.

I do and don't agree. I don't believe banning them from Ontario. Just keep the dogs on leashes. I mean a dog is a dog and any breed of dog can be harmful. Pitbulls seem to be more dangerous though, just keep watch on them don't ban them and make people go to jail that is so stupid!!

I just think regardless of the dog keep him leashed . A (person we know) had a dog that bit my oldest son 3 times .We asked her to leash him but she didn't .Then my youngest son who is 5 got attacked by the same dog one day while he was standing right beside his dad .It was not provoked or anything . We had no choice but to call the police because we were afraid of what might have happened to my child next time . I'm not talking nips but bites that drew blood . The owners on their own decided to get the dog put to sleep (may I also say he was very old) so that could have been the reason . Not all dog bite because of their training or being teased .They just bite ! I don't think it matters the breed . It's unfair to say ban pit bulls because it certainly wasn't a pit bull who bit my sons . Also the very dog (Petey) the cute little ring eyed dog off of the show ( Little Rascals ) was a pit bull and he was adorable . Just thought I'd throw that in

Glad to see people agree with me.

Yes, Pit Bulls are considered to be the most dangerous dog, but once they are gone there will be another "most dangerous" dog. Are they going to start banning German Sheppards and Rottweilers now too? In my opinion, a dog will bite if the owner mistreats him, or doesn't train him properly. Any dog can be trained to fight, it's the people who are stupid about this.
A lot of Pit Bulls are dangerous, because people buy them for protection. Most owners want a vicious dog. That is where the stereotype that they are so horrible comes from.
The government is making a big mistake on this one, and I will be very upset to hear that any puppies have been destroyed because they were born after a certain day.
Anyways, thanks for all your opinions, I appreciate it.

    I completely agree with bob.

Pitbulls are the fourth least likely dog to bite people, labs,Cocker spaniels and poodles bite more than pit bulls do.

There was a very good presentation made on this subject, but i cant remember the link, if i can get it ill be sure to post it here

btw i have a pitbull but she is the sweetest animal alive. she'd never hurt a fly and she was abused before we got her, still she's never bitten and person, even playfully.
