Cosmetic Surgery- Good or Bad?

Hello, everyone. My name is Sydney, and I am giving a speech on Cosmetic surgery in my Applied Communicatons class. I have everything that I need except for one thing- opinions. That is where you all come in. I need to know what you all think, be it positve or negative, about cosmetic surgery.

I would like to ask you all not to get Cosmetic surgery confused with Reconstructive surgery. These two types of procedures often confuse my classmates, and I wouldn't want you all to be confused as well.

If you would like to have my opinion, I think that cosmetic surgery is a bad thing because of the many health risks that are possible. Although there are health risks to every surgical procedure, I feel that the risks are too great just so that a person will look better.

Next, it gives people a reason not to love the person that they already are- imperfections and all. While the cosmetic surgery may have made them look better, people will pay more attention to them for that very reason- looks. Most people will completely ignore the personality of a person and go right for their looks.

Lastly, there are too many surgeons who aren't qualified to do the procedures. Norman Waterhouse, secretary of BAAPS (to find out what it stands for, go to news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2305567.stm), said, "The implication of this report is that the commercial drive is influencing clinical decisions, and that is not good medicine. Once you think of cosmetic medicine as a market place, then market techniques start coming into play, and it is not appropriate." Waterhouse also went onto say that at present it was possible for somebody who had failed to complete their training as a cosmetic surgeon could simply set themselves up in a private practice anyway.

I would like to thank you all for your time, and please answer this post ASAP!!!!

I would never have cosmetic surgery. I think this world is obsessed with looks. People should just be happy with who they are. If you do the surgery then you aren't really "you" anymore.

    Completely agree.

But then we live in a sad world where looks are so important, and people will be made to feel insecure, no matter how good they look. I don't agree, but part of me can't blame them, they are victims of society, really.

I think somebody so desperate to change how they look (and risk the complications that you mentioned) to make themselves happy and feel accepted is clearly deeply troubled in some way... You can change their image, yes, but will that address their mental problems? I don't know, is counselling involved around cosmetic surgery? Are people psychologically assessed first?

I would never risk my health to look better, I rely on my mind. And personally I feel the more intelligent or beautifully-minded a person is, the more attractive they look to me... A massive cliche, but oh well...I have no idea if that helps lol

surgery also can be a good thing! just think if you were attacked by a person or animal or something and it ripped part of your face off. Then what you go around scared for life. at least they are there for that. There are also a few other ways it could be good. Like if you were born with a birth defect like missing an eye or something. You should be glad we have the technology today so that you didn't have to walk around everyday being an outcast. But normal people that need help are seriously in need of mental help.

I think the two are classified differently, although I'm not sure... They ought to be

Tim, sweetie, that's RECONSTRUCTIVE surgery, not cosmetic. Cosmetics include breast lifts, nose jobs, and brow lifts just to live up to others' expectations, not fixing something to look the way you were before.

It is sad, but honestly most of us today go out of our way to "llok" like the person society expects us to.

In all honesty what we are expected to look like changes daily depending upon which suprestar is in the headlines.

With that said I feel that cosmetic surgery is a bad idea. First when one starts the procedures they never stop. There is always something else that needs to be "fixed" and then you must repeat each procedure as you age.

This however is only my opinion and I no, I do not have great looks and there is plenty of room for improving my looks, but I will gladly continue to live with what God gave me instead of chasing down a surgeon to improve my looks and leaving many to wonder where they stuck the mattle stamp when they finished the procedures.

yeah i'm sorry i didn't see the cosmetic part on the post that is my fault. I thought this was about straight up all around plastic surgery, which would include reconstructive as well. Sorry all for that tho i really didn't see the cosmetic.

No good. Cosmetic surgery is for fools. If you can't love yourself who will? I look in the mirror and see nothing wrong...I wouldn't change a thing but you may think I'm the ugliest heffer around. Everyone sees things differently...I happen to think Naomi Campbell is NOT pretty however she is a frigin super model. We are who we are for a reason...why change that. I don't know...my opinions..

I love my big butt. I love my curves. Although I don't have an hourglass figure, I'm okay with the way I look. There are ways to get people to accept you without changing your apperance.

You all make really good points, and are extremely lucky to be able to except who you are! I’m not sure that it’s really the person wanting to get the surgery but in the fear of being left out from their peers! We often see everywhere pictures of what women should be and what they should look like. I personally would love to just rip these articles all up! Who’s to say what a woman should look like! If a person had no clue about what the ideal ‘beautiful’ is they’d probably look in the mirror and feel amazing! Yet this is the society we live in! I must admit I’ve been guilty of thinking about getting breast implants…. But do you know why? Not because I personally have a problem with them, but because other people have mentioned it. Growing up there was certain hits and punches on the size of my breasts….. You know just innocent little comments. But it made me start thinking that I really would be much prettier with breast implants! Many people today lead their lives afraid to express opinions! Why are they scared? Mostly because they’re self conscious of being laughed at and it’s mostly because of their looks! Many people believe that if they just change something they’ll be heard in the world! So I don't really know if we should find the Individual who got the sergery as wrong, but our society as a whole.

Brigette if you surgically change a part of your body because of what society says then that makes you just as bad as them if not worse. If you are that susceptible to someone else’s thoughts then you have serious issues. I do understand where you are coming from but it's bigger than that. One should be able to look in the mirror and see the beauty of their soul and their heart not what lies on the outside. I see what society says is beautiful but that does not mean I have to live by it. I see beauty from MY eyes not someone else’s. I can look in the mirror and see a piece of perfection because I know I was created ME for a reason. I can not say it is right or wrong but only share my opinion. In my eyes it makes a person extremely shallow and even more weak to get cosmetic surgery. Again that is ONLY an opinion.

If you need SURGERY to make you feel better then I feel really sorry for you and everyone you know.

    Reply to Alexis:

I hear what you're saying about judging people. And we shouldn't judge people. But we aren't really judging, we're stating how we feel. Another thing; just because something'll make you feel better doesn't necissarily mean that you should do it. I feel that there are a lot more cost efficient ways to make oneself feel better about themselves.

Meh Im sort of spilt with this one, I dont believe its right for me for starters I would like to age gracefully the lines on my face and stretches on my tummy tell the story of my life.

When it comes tot he rights of other people I mean go ahead if thats what is going to make you feel better then utilise the services they have on offer, but NOT at the risk of your health or too an obsessive state either, that makes me sick. I also dont condone surgery for young men and women who are still devloping and growing both physically and mentally. Once your 21 go ahead, but make sure your decisions are educated and informed ...

you mean, such as in the newspaper... "life long makeup! never put on lipstick again! wake up and your face is ready for the day!" ?? i've seen that in cali. I had to do a speech on abortion.

    ok, let's see. AGAINST:

#1: Botox. Not good. you can end up with paralysis and many diseases because of botox. who would want to inject fat into their bodies?

#2: You will only have one look for your entire life! What happens when you get old, you'll have a granny face and puckering red lolita lips??

#3: Surgery is never needed unless it saves your life (in a serious manner). Other than that, it is excess and therefore the cosmetics industry makes billions off of your little paycheck.

Hmm... and I as the devil's advocate (as my teacher calls it) shall argue against myself with FOR objections.

    FOR cosmetic surgery:

#1: My boyfriend will love me forever.
#2: I've been born with a deformed face and this would really help me out.
#3: I want everlasting beauty, sweety... not just in my teen years!
    ___________

Btw, i'm against cosmetic surgery. I prefer being beautiful on the inside, a path some never choose.

is it any of ur business wat others do with ther time and money??? leav people alone i would hate to be ur friend and hav u stickin ur nose in my business!!!! i dont want plastic surgery i've nevr had plastic surgery but people can do wat they want with there breasts, faces, and buts!!!!!

"I prefer being beautiful on the inside, a path some never choose."

    Why can't you be both?

I'm for cosmetic surgery. Surgery can change a persons life - sometimes for the worst, sure, but think of all the sucess stories. People who've felt uncomfortable with something about them, resulting in an extremely lack of confidence.

If surgery can make a person feel better about themselves, then good, because everyone deserves to feel good about themselves. Just because some people can learn to accept the bad points about them, then good for them. Not everybody is like that though.

And I would get surgery if I wasn't already in love with myself. Maybe in twenty years time, but I don't need it just yet.

i think its stupid, people like 100 years ago didn't need it. Its time we started simplfing, why do we care so much about how we look, not every one is born a model.

okay. so, the consensus is -- cosmetic surgery is bad.

Now, how many of those who've said so are in a satisfying relationship with someone who's not in the least the 'media regulated standard' of what is attractive?

  • Natalie84

If someone is not satisfied with my looks then they need to move around. I am comfortable in my skin and I LOVE who and what I am as I was created "ME" for a reason. If you waste your whole life away worrying about what other think or changing who you are to better 'fit in' to make others like or love you then you'll never enjoy it. HOW SILLY IS THAT!?! Pretty dumb if you ask me. Everyone is capable of BEAUTY...when your heart shines out it's more beautiful than ANY surgery could ever handle.

Okay, Sarah...we're not sayin that it's any of our business! We're stating our opinions. I wouldn't think any less of someone if they went on and got Cosmetic Surgery...maybe in the past, but not now, because I've grown up and got some sense....it is someone else's business entirelyto get cosmetic surgery done to them. I just wanted to know what people would say because I had to do a speech and I needed opinions! I mean, I watch "Plastic Surgery:Before and After" for goodness sake!

Also....to say "i would hate to be your friend" is kinda harsh, girl! Lighten up! People are entiltled to an opinion!

Unless your horrible looks are ruining your life, I don't think it's a good idea.
Besides, in most cases your face ends up looking like plastic.

Lol.......But I'd rather have a natural looking disaster than to risk my health and look like a plastic barbie doll....but if you wonna go and risk your health for vanity, go right on ahead.

Besides, no matter how ugly you may be to one person, someone else just might think that you're the most beautiful woman/man in the world. Ya know what they say....love is blind.

I know it's hard to believe, but looks don't matter to everyone. Although nowadays, it sure as heck seems that way!!!!
