    Hello Everybody

Now I recently saw a report on Oprah about Dove's new advertising campaign for "real beauty" Please click on the link below for more information and to see the pictures I am mentioning in this post...

    http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com.au/

Basically want to know peoples thoughts on this one...do you find these women sexy? Are they reflecting a more healthy image to young women in todays society? Any further thoughts, arguments or feelings you have about the images portrayed in this campaign...?

Your reasons both for and against this campaign would be of great value to me and my research.

    Thanks guys

I'd say it's about time. Personally I am sick of all these sickly looking stick thin women who are deemed perfect in these advertisements. All it tells young women today is that in order to be accepted you must look like this at all costs.
I applaud Dove for their efforts to change this. It's refreshing to see real women celebrating their bodies and embracing their imperfections. It sends a much needed message to the young women of todays society.

Sunny said the first thing I had in mind....she can look good, but its the mouth that can make her ugly..thats the home I was raised in anyhow, don't go for looks go by a persons mouth...

Being a young woman stil (15 yrs) I think the first lady did portray a positive look for me and other young girls...I say that because she was covered up..I am a bit tired of seeing half naked woman on TV in magazines, I'm sorry but they really should realize that girls do look up to them and if your a trashy whore then what do you think your promoting?

Eirisa I also want to talk about what you mentioned to me in the poem we wrote..remember when you said the womans mind used to be the sexiest thing, why look at these woman and say your ugly because you have no makeup or your boobs are small or your to covered up...I don't believe you can tell if someone is sexy or not until you get to know their personality because I believe in the olden days when the womans mind was the sexiest thing...its sad because a lot of people who look at them will judge by their appearance..but why? How can you tell? What if the ugliest girl on there had the personality of a princess..was so sweet and kind to others...does that not make her sexy?
I want to follow up on this too! now im interested

^^ I do agree......but has society really got us all thinking looks are the beauty? I still don't think you can say someone is beautiful without truly knowing them...perhaps their whole outside is but you can not judge someone as a whole without knowing them..idk i guess I don't know how to back myself up but....oh well

Isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder, and not the advertising world?

  • Eibutsina

Psymon as much as we would like to think that old proverb is indeed the case - look at todays society and the extent to which it is influenced by the media - do you honestly think this is still the case?

    Great discussion guys :o) Thanks

Personally Eibutsina, yes I do. Of course we are all free to believe whatever we want, but I find advertising to be generally insulting to my intelligence and therefore I choose to ignore it. Whilst it can be truly said that advertising influences the society, by communicating with one another within that society we do have the power to alter their influence. I draw your attention to the anti fur trade campaign of the eighties which certainly had a major impact on the the way society accepted the slaughter of animals for fur coats.
The simplest way to make a point is to boycott any product that promotes this narrow minded way of looking at beauty, womens magazines are a prime example, but I wonder how many of you will put your discontent into action.

Fair enough I respect and agree with you to a certain extent Psymon and please call me Eirisa :o)

I understand what you are saying about advertising being somewhat insulting to ones intelligence but its so in ones face sometimes it hard not to notice. Whether your driving you car past a billboard, reading the paper or magazine, flipping through the TV channels its everywhere and is easily accessed by everyone...i guess I was speaking generally about the majority of society rather than you personally, I should have made that a lil more clear.
In relation to your comment on the Anti Fur campaign the boycott really didn't do a great deal yes real fur in fashion has been slightly minimalised but at the same time the value of such fur has increased rapidly and many fashion followers and designers do still wear it, proudly.
Also in boycotting any product that promotes an narrowminded way of looking at beauty, that would basically leave us with what? Almost nothing in reality...even dove though coming good on this campaign hasn't always advertised this way and I honestly can't name off the top of my head any product that doesn't promote a narrow minded view of beauty - however I immensely commend Dove for there efforts and you for yours in this thread.

    Love and respect

    Thanks again Psymon

I will say my peace on it. Seeing I was embroiled in it, for a certain amount of time.

Beauty is indeed not in the eye of the beholder. If it was, the world would be a much more to say the least happy place. Where self esteem would not be shattered and where anorexia and bulimia would be nothing but an old myth.

In high fashion and high list movies, women will always and must be skinny to either book or audition for those roles. But the fact is the fashion world and to those “gay” men who decide what is beautiful and what is not. There may be a chance to break new ground at what beauty truly is.

In the seventies, people of ethnicity were not even considered to be booked in high fashion, but I guess Iman broke that rule.

We need more confident people who are different, who are beautiful in their personality and who truly believe that they are beautiful to themselves. But that day shall never come….I suppose…

    Sigh…

Personally I think every woman in her own right is beautiful, and if I had a chance I would do each one of them….Lol.

Hi Eirisa :-)) Yes it's shoved in our faces everyday and that makes it all the harder to ignore, but ignore it we must. I think I meant rather more that the fur trade was held up as an example, and funnily enough is right back in the news yesterday re the trade in cat and dog fur coming out of China. We have organisations like the body shop and other humanist based organisations that fight against the narrowminded way of looking at beauty.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive, I fully understand the extent of the infiltration of advertising into everyday thinking, and it's not going to change overnight, by any stretch of the imagination... but hey, just think what it would be like if we did change things...

Love and light and thanks to you for opening this thread...

In agreement, it's about time a major company stopped promoting thinness as an attractive trait, and started promoting a healthier outlook. Many thanks for sharing this with me.

    Peace. [Sole]

This is true but its not of the typical advertising nature and hence my reasons for bringing this up for discussion.

Dove is using REAL unedited women for its campaign rather than computerised airbrushed women and thats the point of discussion here...

Its just a very unique campaign, its real...

Personally I think that this add is great! a lot of people are fixated on looking like stars which are for many people their rolemodels.. I applaud Dove for starting this campaign, Some people may not like it but it is the truth and I think every woman can be beautifull, For me beauty starts when you make something out of your life instead of focusing on being thin. I think that other brand names should make these kind of shocking campaigns to change the image women may get from the regular commercials.

I Agree With Sunny, Beauty Is On The Inside As Well As The Outside, Most People Find My Personality Attractive...Thats The First Thing You'll Notice When You Meet Me Is That I Have a Kind Heart And a Sweet Soul & I Love To Make People Laugh & Feel Comfortable In My Presence...Its Plenty Of Pretty Women With The Ugliest Attitudes You've Ever Seen & I View Them As Ugly & Nasty....Jesse Mcartney's "Beautiful Soul" Is Kind Of Corny But The Lyrics Are True xoxo-Nikki-xoxo

Alright, well I do agree that true beauty is on the inside, and only on the inside. However, I do applaud dove for doing this, as it's a much needed confidence boost for people - young and old.
It's better to have someone remind you that beauty isn't about looking like the models do, but it's also found individually from person to person for greater things than just the length of your legs. (Or the size of your chest - as the site has so graciously put up there).
Everyone is beautiful in one way or another physically, emotionally and spiritually - but too many girls today (especially girls anyway, I'm sure males have the same doubts in themselves) are worried about the physical aspect, trying to be perfect.
So, way to go Dove for that much anyway.
