Personally I'm against having women in any unit that has to operate in the field or in a battle zone.

Speaking from experience I did not enjoy having to carry an extra twenty five pounds in my pack because none of our seven girls could cope with the kit we had to carry.

Also, based on my experiences in the field, women cannot run as fast in full kit, tire more quickly under these conditions and become emotional to the point of breaking down in tears after a few days (six of the seven women broke down with in a week). If we had not been in the field in Canada and in a hot zone like Kosovo, Bosnia or a more modern theatre like Afghanistan or Iraq I don't know how long they would have lasted, how much of a negative effect they would have had on my unit or how much of a burden on our effictiveness as a fighting force would have been.

Now, the situation may have changed since 1998, but that really happened to me. How much did I enjoy lugging an eightyfive pound bergen, rifle, two mortar rounds and a portable radio (plus a spare battery) about for six weeks? Not a lot.

My feelings about the women in Iraq right now? I'd make 'em all sandwiches a nice hot cup of tea and let them know how much I admire their resolve and determination to be there. I LOVE each and every one of them for what they're doing for us.

If this were the middle ages, they would be called female warriors although they would have to rebels first. What I think of women in the army.

    Let me ask you this:

What do you think of women doing men's work?

Answer that question, and you get your answer to whether women should be in the army.

Anyone who is willing to kill people for money, no matter their sex or colour or sexual orientation, should be allowed in.

And that is good, because I don't want people who are willing to kill other people for money walking around the streets I live on, let them kill other people who want to kill other people and they will hopefully wipe each other out and leave only the intelligent well informed humans who will tell their Goverments to go have intercourse with themselves when they ask for "good men and women" to go kill some people.

Umm...what is there to say? What is the differenece then men being there? Just because women have higher voice, and breast means nothing. I can't believe this is still an issue this day and age.

if she can kill people or do whatever other job and passes the same equal requirements as men (because some jobs are different requirements for example canadian firefighters[maybe american too i'm not certain])

if she can do it let her

and Nior define "a man's job" because i see nothing that a man can do that a woman can't

Resannie, I had plenty of experience in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Bosnia.

I will say this, I think the Russians had the right idea when they made all women units. They were extremely effective on the ground and in the air. From the top of my head I think that two women are in the top ten for russian fighter aces.

So don't get me wrong, women have some abilities that make them better than men in some positions in the military. For example, snipers. Women are less detached from the kill, are more patient and cope with the personal aspect of sniping better than most men do.

Who is really to say who can and cannot be in the military if they meet the requirements? If woman are strong and powerful enough, BRAVO to them.

I know Bret will have something to say about my statement. =). And if not, WOW.. I'm wrong! =0. ha.

Well, I, for one, can shoot a gun more accurately than my step brother who is the same age as me. Then again, my twin sister couldn't shoot a gun to save her life.

My step brother is more accurate with a sword...strangely. My twin sister is stealthier.

So, my opinion will be based on talent and skill.

If a woman can do it, if she willingly signs up for it, is willing to die for her country and accepts those terms, then she should be able to fight.

Bret did bring up a lot of valid points, though, too. Like the crushing emotional differences. Also, men were built to more muscular. Women were built to carry babies, feed them, and to have lots of cushion on their heinies. Then again, there are excepts to both.

So, like I said. It really all comes down to skills, talents, and willingness.

i think that if they can pass all of the tests and stuff to join, then they should go for it!

oh, and i had thought our society had already come off of the whole 'its a mans world' thing? todays women are more powerful than in the past, and CAN be more powerful than men. if joining the military is what they want to do, then i say why not? providing they can keep up with the whole ordeal.... but the same goes for guys as well...

^i think that if they can pass all of the tests and stuff to join, then they should go for it!

I whole heartedly agree. Only problem is that the test requirements for men and women in the British Army are very different.

During my basic We had a BFT (basic Fitness Test)

A 3 mile run, half as a squad the other half personal best effort. Men have 10 minutes 30 seconds, women 14 minutes.

8 Regulation pull ups. (not the same as normal pull ups, it's harder and higher duress as no ruthm can be maintained) Women have inverted push ups (feet on floor, hold a beam, pull up to chest, which the men could do all day) time 20 I think.

The only area where there was equality was in the sit ups and that's a beep test that only lasts a minute.

Oh, and on the combat fitness test the girls only had to carry 18 pounds to our 25.

If the girls could have carried the same workload as the men I would have been all for it. The girls were nice in the main and mixed in with the lads really well. Shame they couldn't really cut it in the field.

If a female can do it a female should do it. The tests aren't all that different to get in where I come from. I'm deffinately going to join the ADF unless the laws are passed that females cannot join the military.

"The tests aren't all that different to get in where I come from."

yes but there still are different, once again proving equality is usually a one-sided card. We claim men and women are equal yet testing is different between the 2 of them... how equal is that?

  • emmerz

not at all..... then they should make it equal! lol and THEN it would be fair...

exactly thus causing the problem of women getting in the millitary for doing less work than man have to

I'm kind of ambivalent on this topic; to be honest I haven't really thought about it before. Call me 'old fashioned' but I do believe that women are physically the 'weaker' sex, and that our bodies were not build to carry as much weight as a man.

But at the same time, I also believe that if you can do it, prove them wrong who said you couldn't because of who you are and go for it.

I don't think it really matters about the sex.
Also, I am a hopeless romantic, and call me unrealistic as well but I think it's romantic for a woman to be home waiting for her lover to come home from war haha... but that's just me.
Again, I have mixed emotions about this, so.. yeah.

I think that women should be allowed to join the army if they please, BUT the fitness tests and everything should be the same, and jsut because we they are women, it should not just be assumed that they are weaker than the men. I am a girl, and I can lift MUCH more weight than my boyfriend can and I have alot more developed and stronger muscles than he does, and I know I could kick his ass anyday;). In the end, I guess it just comes down to the person, but if the girls can't meet the requirements, dont let them in, and if they can, I'm all for it.
