Atrial Fibrillation

by Jack Nightengale   Nov 30, 2016

All it takes is a... Thump Thump...
to let you know that you're still alive.
At any moment that sound can go... Beeep
You flatline and death takes you for a drive.

You try to avoid emergency rooms and bad habits,
you try to eat healthy foods like your greens and carrots.
Still the sound within your chest will eventually sway,
you'll either give up or fight just to stay.

Atrial fibrillation is the medical name of an unnatural heart beat,
like the banging of war drums on a ripple, will quickly take you off your feet.
You try to stand but the pressure takes away your breath,
along your shoulders you can feel the cold fingers of death.

Still you struggle to stand and take that little trip,
on a stretcher in an ambulance until you hit a dip.
Thump thump... Thump thump... Thump.... Beeeeep...
Flatline records, the defibrillators come out when you've gone too deep.

No matter the struggle or how challenging it may seem,
you can over come anything, especially in a dream.
Awaken restored and into a new day,
But, you know that in the long run, it won't always be this way.

A-fib is definitely a scary thing. My husband was born with a congenitial heart defect and has had 3 open heart surgeries. His last one put him in A-fib and they had to shock him after trying medicine to correct it. It's hard to see someone with such a loving heart having to go through so much. I felt your write deeply, really hits home-

From one who suffers from A-fib due to occupational hazards, I am terribly sorry to hear about your husband. He is a very strong man to be able to hold his own when considering the conditions. I know the pain of having to be shocked and wouldn't wish for others to have to suffer through the same. My best to you and your husband
