Good Samaritan

Glimpses of Rosy (my neighbor), pruning flowers in her balcony,
have etched permanent refuge in my bachelor heart.

She needed help today.
Seemed to be going out on tour,
and I was only too willing, needless to say.

Her melodic voice immersed me,"Oh Ronnie! Imagine,
I've lost the keys to my rooms! How, oh how will I get in
on my return?"

"We may make duplicates?", I put in.

She didn't listen, only blared, "I've got
twenty more minutes on hand!
Ronnie dear, can't you climb up
the pipes and bang
in through
the rear window?"

Even a bolt from the blue wouldn't have struck me harder.
I reasoned, I was no rock climber.

She didn't listen, but argued, "How
do the thieves do it, then?"

(Oh, had I been a thief, I would have stolen her heart, earlier!)
"Why not call the Fire Fighters, these people have . . "

She interrupted,"Why am I asking YOU, then?
I thought, you are brave enough to do this for ME."

Her sighs stirred me up, even heroes are human, eh?
"OK, so be it . . . here I go! . . . "

My upward journey was stuffed with slips, hiccups, shrieks, scrapes, scratches . . .

By the time I reached the sixth floor, my shirt was torn to bits;
I could sense the earth rotating under my feet!

Yet my endeavors seemed fruitless, the wretched "rear window" didn't give in.

By this time, a group of cheerleaders ( gang of schoolchildren returning home)
have joined Rosy, yelling "COME DOWN!"

Sir Isaac Newton might have been amused,
had he been a witness to the struggle of a "human"
against the gravity, and along with it!

My downward trip contained more of slips, cheers, shrieks, scratches . . .

At the end of it all, my beaming Rosy gifted me a charming smile, and said,
"Thanks Ronnie, watching your heroics I got assured - it won't be an easy work for burglars!
I wanted to make sure! But do take care of your ankle, its swollen, and do not neglect the bruises,
apply some . . . "
OH!!!
I didn't hear what else she said.
