Past Praying For Dreamless Nights

by SmileeItsBritt   May 20, 2009

You couldn't even win the battle
What makes you think you could win this war?
You replay the moments you lost between sleep
And you retrace the scars you've left before

Your eyes squint at the shadows you hide behind
To try to make out some form of relief
But your eyes can't adjust to the changes in light
Because you threw out all of your hopes and beliefs

You try to sing to a song that you can't understand
You try to hum to the melody, but your voice is off key
The words that you search for could never be right
So you make due with excuses that even you yourself can't believe

You falter at the weight of each mistake
The weight on your shoulders makes you weak and unsteady
You try to shake off the past to find some sort of balance
You can't fall asleep, though your eyelids are so heavy

You count backwards to yourself from one hundred
Hoping that you can be graced with a few moments of sleep
You sigh with the realization you tried so hard to avoid
These nightmares will always be yours to keep
