A Soldier's Prayer

by Bleu   Mar 15, 2018

He holds his gun too his chest, his bible, in his pants.

he prays silently, that this would not be his last chance.

He whispers,

"Lord, i know you are listening up there.

If you weren't, i know I would be alittle more scared.

i know you have got a plan for me today.

if you didn't, i would not be standing here in the shade.

Guide me in this battle, I may not win.

And if I die today, be the one taking my hand."

The forest is dark, and he closes his eyes.

He hands his best friend a letter, and tries to push the tears aside.

He prays,

"Lord, it is so close now.

I am trying to walk straight, but i dont know how.

Everything is happening so quick and it is getting hard to breathe.

Help me hold on, so i can stay on this noble steed.

Hold my hand and protect me.

Help me be the soldier I need to be."

He is in battle, and he does not see the spear.

The blade was sharp, as it gazed against his ear.

He says,

"Lord, i am ready to leave.

I lived my life, and never failed to believe.

I am ready for you too bring me home.

My belief in you will never be gone.

I am ready, so take my hand.

It is so cold, and I am ready to go to the promised land."

*** Three days later***

His ghost is on the couch, next to his wife.

The knock comes from the door, and he knows not to think twice.

His wife answers the door and two soldiers stand there.

She tries to hold back tears, knowing this is not fair.

they say,

"ma'am we are here today too let you know that you Husband is gone.

He fought a good battle, but, it was one that could not be won.

He gave this letter to me, as we went off too war.

I kept it safe, hoping i would not have to deliver it too this door"

Now she reads the letter every night.

Keeping it safe, so she has nothing to fill her with fright.

it has been five years, and she has now moved on.

But, she carries that letter around, knowing not all battles can be won.

I read this yesterday and had to put down the phone. The death letters I wrote before my first deployment was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do... never thought much on the ones who would read them.

I could not imagine ever receiving one, much less having to write one.
