Pangs of Hunger

by Sanath Kumar   Mar 29, 2008

How many of us know what real hunger means?
For most of us it's just a small interval between sumptuous meals
If you want to know what genuine hunger means,
Just look at those poor and starved Ethiopians.

Scenes of young ones clinging to their mothers, waiting to be fed
Hapless undernourished babies crying, less alive than dead!
Food is their only concern; food alone is their immediate need.
They look helplessly to the rest of the world expecting us to feed.

It's indeed a pathetic sight to see this world "welcome" these young
Without anything to feed them and leave them with a parched tongue!
Of what use is the scientific advancement that this world boasts about?
Of what use any development that cannot solve this basic need in and out?

We don't have to go to Ethiopia to find such needy ones on the card
We can find them all over the globe, perhaps, even in our back yard!
Isn't it heart-rending to see such people getting such a raw deal?
Let's all understand the pangs of hunger which these people feel.

It shouldn't be fate that decides why these unfortunate ones
Have been reduced to miserably skinny lifeless skeletons.
Our heart and will can certainly transform these "victims of fate";
If only we decide not to waste any food, surplus would generate.

Most of us are so fortunate that God has provided us with enough to eat
If we share all the food this world has, each of us would still have a treat.
We party, we enjoy and we tend to have all possible fun
And scarcely give a thought about food thrown half-eaten!

One morsel of food that we throw in the dustbin with such an attitude cold
Could be the elixir of life for some famished one somewhere in this world.
Couldn't we have been more thoughtful by using this to feed
Someone much less fortunate than us and really in such a need?

So, next time let's all be more careful to eat just what we need
Let's not dispose good food on which someone else could feed.
Even if a few of us were to follow this principle during our lifetime,
We could bail out most such hungry people at least one at a time.
