Oblivious

by BriOni Mgueuene   Apr 28, 2008

Broken glass glittering on the concrete playground,
Puncturing balls and tires and knees.
Kicked to one side by sneakered feet,
The children cursing as they do so
Before they repair their balls and tires yet again

Used syringes, littered on the sandbox,
The points gleaming wickedly in the sun
Tempting toddlers with their deadly shining
A prick, a cry, and infection rages unseen.
Death waiting for curious fingers

Used condoms, tied, untied
Thrown in the corner of the playground
Disposed of casually
As meaningless as the act they were created for
Just another part of urban life.

Lying on the grass near the playground
A drunk, vomiting, cursing, yelling
Throws his empty bottle at the kids.
It smashes on the concrete playground, glittering
And the children play on….oblivious.
