They

by Sam   May 19, 2008

Never marked, just as a ghost
It's they - the kind - who pay the most:
They let all else live free.
They bare the stripes,
Endure the pain;
This is their destiny.

They scrape and starve to just subsist
With no reward, while all the rest
"Live the life of Riley,"
Not knowing what was sacrificed
For them to live so highly.

Furthermore, it's they - the meek -
Who day to day, week to week,
Are tread upon by all.
Making efforts to stay
Out of the way,
But used as stairs, they crawl.

Sacrificial, they - the lambs -
Are used as scapegoats for the scams:
They're led right to the slaughter;
Used, abused,
Beaten, bruised,
Knowing not that lamb's somebody's daughter.

We are they.
