Hero's death

by Grant Gilbert AKA Slash   Jun 2, 2008

Hero's death

They sent me off to a hero's death
As I left on the train, this is what they said
Godspeed my son please return safe
But they didn't know, I'd end up in a grave

I went up to fight for my mom and my dad
My unborn children and a wife I never had
I went up to fight for you and for me
And for freedom, I was led to believe

The bullet that hit me never came from the front
But never hurt any less I found as a result
It broke some bones and blew a hole through my lung
And I knew right then that my death had begun

Little Johnny that shot me sat crying at my side
Trying to hold the hole closed, that he blew through my hide
Begging my forgiveness Johnny did plead
But I couldn't talk, as I struggled to breathe

So two teenage lives are shattered at the whim of the man
I couldn't talk anymore so I kissed the boys hand
I'm sorry dear Johnny, can't hold on anymore
And my spirit has left me as I lay dead on the floor

What an unbelievably sad poem. It speaks to a person on so many levels. Dark, raining-in-the-night sad, but very strong, effectively haunting writing. Lol. An eye for an eye. Or five in this case. Honest Luck
