Can You Predict My Fate? (Free Verse)

by Ashleigh Skye   Jul 1, 2008

Hey tell us to stand up and fight for power,
but when we achieve what they are asking,
they scream
and slap us on the wrists
while telling us to be more like them and quit bucking the system.
If in standing up we get the ground ripped from underneath us
then how can they expect us to change?
School children being taught to embrace who they are
are being forced to blend in with the crowd and be "Good" because to them
being good doesn't mean fighting for what is right and using their power to fix it,
being good means being docile and in a trance like state
for it's much easier to control people who don't fight back.
Do they not remember what it's like
fighting against the power that will break you
and when it does
you're weak,
not smart enough,
why are we doing this to ourselves?
Are we trying
as a species
to get rid of everything that makes us different?
Why is it that the one thing we need to strive towards,
is the one thing that has so much standing in the way.
Robots,
is that what they want?
Or should we ignore all of the rules,
the guidelines,
and their expectations
and take what is ours,
Our right to grow,
to experiment,
and to live.
Maybe next time things aren't looking to great,
and the hand of the law has come down again,
we shouldn't think of it as a bad thing,
just another road block we must overcome,
in order to grow,
and change the world,
for the better.
