You Have To Let Them Go

by gasping for air   Jun 2, 2004

He looked down at her,
She was laying,
Under crisp white linen sheets.
The sheets were rough and coarse,
And he thought,
?She deserves better, much better.?
He had asked for ?better,?
So many times he asked,
They never brought any.
They didn?t understand,
That she needed something soft,
After he had been so hard.

So hard on her,
Too hard on her,
She deserves better.
The bruises he had put on her,
Proved that,
She deserved better.
There had been other times,
When she had been in the hospital,
But everything else had been minor.
A few broken bones,
Some sprained joints,
Which he had done too.
Nothing was as bad as right then,
She had broken ribs,
And somehow he had put her in a coma.
The doctors said that,
She had a good chance of coming out of it,
And he was happy for her.

But he knew that if he stayed,
He?d risk her life again,
Because she?d never leave him.
So he would have to leave her,
It?d break her heart,
But it?d save her life.
And he wants her to live,
For as long as possible,
Because he loves her.
He knelt down beside her bed,
Took her hand,
And kissed her forehead.
That was when the tears,
Started running down his cheeks,
And they wouldn?t stop.

He thought of all the good times,
All of the times he had made her smile,
Made her laugh.
And realized that would never,
Ever happen again,
It hurt his heart.
But he knew,
That if he stayed,
His heart would hurt more.
So for the last time,
He pulled her into his arms,
And held her.
After a few moments he let her go,
Dried his eyes,
And stood up to go.
As he left the room,
He dropped a note on the chair,
And took off before he changed his mind.

Just as he sat on his Harley,
She woke up and saw the note,
And rushed to read it.
The sound of her crying,
Was muffled as he drove away,
Out of her life forever.
She crawled to the window,
With the note in her hand,
And searched frantically for him.
When she couldn?t find him,
She realized he was gone forever,
And let the note fall from her hand.
It fell out the window,
And landed in front of a heart broken soul,
Like her.
She read it,
Speaking the words aloud as she read.
?Sometimes if you love someone,
Really love them,
You have to let them go.
