Brits Abroad!

From my holiday, I am recently back
And busy all day, just trying to unpack
Remembering the great time, that we just had
But there is one thing, that made me so mad

I've been on my travels, all the way to Turkey
And so loved the sun, the sand and the clear blue sea
The people, the culture, the weather, the food
But one thing really did put me in a bad mood

There is just one question I needed to ask
Why do us tourists find it such a hard task
To accept and embrace the culture and food
But to the locals, I heard tourists being rude

"Why is this not real tomato ketchup?
Or English tea, complete with saucer and cup
It's not a holiday without a full English when I wake"
So without question the locals would dutifully make

"Give me a nice pint of proper English beer,
Or a big glass of Scotch would really make me cheer"
"Give me a pizza, a curry, Mcdonalds, KFC,
None of this foreign muck will ever do for me!!"

"I don't want to eat this rubbish they serve here,
Why cant they have the food I love so dear?"
"It's not what you want after a night on the booze,
If I was at home, a juicy kebab I'd now choose!"

So remember once more, where you now are,
You're in Turkey you fool, not your local bar
Serving real 'English' food from morning til night
So if that's what you want, why get on that flight?!!

I totally agree with you poem, having had a great holiday in Turkey which was only spoilt by rude and ignorant none locals causing trouble.
Bacon is not a popular foodstuff in a Muslim country so I steered away from offending by eating Turkish food which was excellent.
A beautifully put together poem by someone who knows how to write a poem with meaning and style. 5/5 Ray

Speaking as an English fan of "foreign muck" who always makes a point of learning "thank you" in the dominant language of wherever I am, I have to say this is just plain beautiful. This was like reading about our Greece-visiting neighbours who were disgusted to find that Eastenders is dubbed and not subtitled over there...
