I'm Awfully Shy

by Wolf Haines   Aug 8, 2008

Every Wednesday unravels in the same heartbreaking,
Self kicking, pulse racing, frustrating
Fashion. It involves me
Pulling up at the school half an hour early.

Waiting for my cousin to appear.
Watching as you park your car near-
By. 'Go and speak to her' I roar
To myself. But I sit, frozen. And then your

Sister arrives. And I watch as you drive away.
I'm dispirited knowing I won't see you until next Wednesday.
Me being me I'm far too timid to approach
You in person. So it's time for a different approach.

Wednesday comes around again. Not a moment too soon!
But wait, you're nowhere to be seen!
I feel that my chance has come and gone.
One spends the week longing to be wrong.

Seven days pass with you on my mind.
I show up at the school hoping to find
You parked in that passion red car with the flirtatious pink
Fluffy steering wheel. Relief, you're there! Time for one to think

Of a way to reveal I like you
Without embarrassing you in front of your friend beside you.
Ingenious! What a plan! 1st prize to my brain!
I will send her a message via paper aeroplane.

Thrown to land in her open window.
It has the advantage of also being romantic. I have my doubts though.
Will she like it?
Will it reach? Will I get it on target?

It's risky as a miss throw could result in taking out
One of her sparkling beautiful eyes. It would be easier to shout,
But then I would look like a thug.
And if she doesn't respond I will then also look like a mug.

Paper aeroplane it is I decide. But what design is best?
Maybe I should do a test?
I can make contact next week
Once the test is complete.

So away she drove again!
Time to design myself the perfect plane.
Fold here, fold there. Testing the accuracy.
No room for complacency!

Wednesday, 2:45
I have a pile of paper aeroplanes at my side.
This is actually quite exciting.
There is a note written on the wings of the planes in ones finest writing.

'To the fairest beauty that could ever grace
This car park, I could not do this face to face,
But I have to tell
You how much I like you, and, well...

Would you like to go on a date with me?
I am sat in the blue VW Golf, I don't know if you can see?'
She pulls up and her window looks open wide!
And she hasn't got her friend at her side!

I reach out and release the note her way,
But the wind makes it stray!
It misses by a country mile! Second go...
But alas, it flies to low!

It ended up in a puddle. Third time with luck!...
On target but, damn it, her window is actually up!
She looks to see what the commotion
At her window is. She spots me so I motion

For her to unwind the glass between us.
(I have already started to blush)
I let the fourth plane glide into her outstretched hand.
(So far it has all gone to plan)

I watch nervously as she looks at the note. My heart race surges!
As she reads a smile emerges
On her pretty face and she turns to me
And says with delighted intonation "Absolutely!"

I get out of my car and head towards her parking space
(Now we both have smiles on our face)
We exchange numbers and before we temporarily go our separate way
I apologetically begin to say...

"When it comes to girls I am awfully shy
Which is the reason why
I had to use the plane
To prevent myself going insane

From not being able to speak to you." All the while
She is giggling, which makes me smile.
We both drive off with a sweet 'goodbye',
All the more happier for me being awfully shy.
