The County

What is it about this place
That made me fall in love?
The miles of space
The rolling hills or the birds that fly above?
Maybe the trees standing so proud
As they play host to many a creature?
Maybe even the lack of dark clouds?
Or even the water feature
Of the shallow stream that flows so slow
As the fish swim through so fast?
Or the way the birds fly so low
As they dip and dive and swirl past?
Or the dragonflies as they skim the water for food?
Or the sheep as they graze the grass?
Could it be the feeling of pure solitude
As I take a stroll down the pass?
Or the noise of the village life
And the silence of it too?
The escape from city strife
And having nothing to do?
The comfort of the church spire
As it rises above the ground?
The old fashioned country attire?
Or the local farmyard sounds?
These might be the reasons why
I love this place so.
My home county,
West Berkshire.
