The forgotten and the firebird

by Alter Ego For Rent   Aug 19, 2008

We're all alone in our own heads
at least, that's how it's supposed to be.

bumps in the road, echoing in your sparkling skull.
stripped down to bones, you still shine.

we all want to be firebirds
reckless in a beautiful ink
but with smoke dangling from your fingertips
and sighing out of your eyes
the world turned away from you.
they turned away
turned away from you.

so now you're looking for love in a coffee shop
and the rest they say is history
darting hands, pleading eyes
it's all we've ever known.
if you're looking for love, i'm right where you left me.

cartwheeling down these streets
all we want to be is alive
so toss your hair back, boy, and laugh like the summer's applauding you.

we're still standing there
though our bodies have moved on
losing balance on a obsidian ridge
some might call it jumping
jumping for joy and all her friends
jumping for justice and all his friends

crumple up the paper
aligning our names in guilt
you know you hoped
you know you hoped
you know you hoped

and if you can't tell if they're telling you you're fine
or if they're telling you goodbye
forget your function
implode into a ghost in a grocery store

and if you can't remember if you're being perfect today
then toss your hair back boy
and laugh like someone's applauding you

yeah, toss your hair back boy
and laugh like they're all applauding you
you know you hoped
you know you hoped

but if she's forgotten your name already
then toss your hair back boy
and laugh like summer's applauding you.
