I Knew Joy

A smile adorned my face
When a butterfly
Flew past the bus

Mere seconds passed

It flapped energetically
Sometimes carried lightly in the breeze
In its nectar infused dance

Does it know joy,
Reveling in the freedom of its wings?
Is it aware/unaware (for who can say?)
That it will die within a day?

Would that I could glide
Effortlessly
Through my brief life

Still, I rode piggyback
Or is it butterfly back?
And in that moment
I knew joy
