Running Puzzles [Sestina]

by Brittany   Oct 17, 2008

Contemplating all that's been broken,
with memories as dark and innocent as rain.
There's nothing left here,
nothing left to know.
Regretting every mile of distance,
stuck in between.

While I'm between
shards of broken
glass, the distance
is erased by sheets of rain,
and all I'll ever know
is that you never wanted to be here.

Because what did we have here?
It was a simple love between
two people who could never know
they would end up broken.
Pieces fell in an endless rain
anticipating distance.

How could we ever conquer that distance?
I'd have to be able to leave here,
driving in Friday night rain,
tucked in on the highway between
impatient cars, thoughts broken
and scattered searching for truth in what I know.

So tell me what you know
about us and this distance
that has left us so broken.
Tell me that here
isn't the barrier between
us. Tell me it's the rain.

Well if you're into lies and blaming rain,
just let me know,
and we can let go of this. We can have nothing between
us at all. Not even distance
because all we'll have is here
and now. Forget about the times we were broken.

Between resisting distance,
fighting rain and the inability to know,
let's sit here together, utterly broken.
