Left behind

by Rodney Kirby   Jan 9, 2009

Abigail hugged her father as he boarded the plane,
She stood and saluted him, as they called out his name.

An all to familiar scene, tears came down her cheeks with a sigh,
The little girl said, 'I love you and Hello'- cause she hated goodbye.

He climbed into the Humvee, not knowing later he'd be thrown,
Thousands of miles away he left his wife and daughter alone.

It was mass destruction nothing was left, as day became night,
The other soldiers stood in disbelief as they stared at the sight.

Everyday searching for the enemy, across these deserts he'd roam
Thinking about his daughter and his wife he left at home.

For my country and the guy next to me I would gladly give my life,
The love I have for my brothers is the same I hold for my wife.

We all walk these roads together and we all feel the pain,
Of hearing the trumpets played and the calling of a name.

Marcus Gabriel 3-2-1-8 the Commander called with no Reply,
Abigail couldn't hold back her tears and she started to cry.

Tears streamed down her little face as she heard her father's name,
To young to fully understand, but she knew things would never be the same.

Marcus Gabriel 3-2-1-8 (the words Echoed) they called his name again,
The little Girl stood up and said, I'm of my fathers blood in his place I will stand- even
Though I am only Ten.

As the little girl left the service you could hear the rifles shoot,
As she passed by the isles each soldier stood tall and rendered her a salute.

Some people understand that in a military funeral they call out everyone that was in your squad by last name and the last four of your social, they also call out the person who died, it is heart wrenching thank you

    Omy word.
This was such a wonderful write.
    You have an awesome talent.
Writing seems to have been apart of you
    for quiet sometime.
At first I didnt really understand the poem
But by the time i was finished
I was left breathless with a tear in my eye.
    5/5
    Take care
