Esmeralda

by NightFlyer   May 29, 2009

In youth, I left Hispania
Drawn by the lust for wealth and gold
And left behind Esmeralda
My lady fair no chains could hold.

It calls me now, her memory
The emerald cross she loved to wear
Her smile bright, so filled with glee
As she combed down her long black hair.

In three years time, I got a note
A sealed letter addressed to me
"I'm going to join thee soon", she wrote
"So now, my love, please wait for me".

Deep ocean green were her fair eyes
A gold bracelet upon her arm
Deep crimson were the western skies
When she embarked for waters warm.

Sweet maiden of the Seven Seas
As her ship sailed, the New World bound
She walked the deck in windward breeze
And marveled as it swirled around.

But a new storm stirred the foam
Nearby her ship, the tempest loomed
Her galleon so far from home
That fatal wind, it sealed her doom.

The coming night brought angry clouds
And driving wind caused sails to rip
Its raging sound, so raw and loud
Cruel death pursued her fated ship.

Though with a crew of much renown
From flying death, no one could flee,
Then flutter, snap, the masts went down
All hands were lost, drowned in the sea.

My lady held on to a mast
As waves pulled her to Ocean's floor
In howling winds, so cruelly cast
To sea's black depths forevermore.

By dawn, the wild storm had fled
No sign of ship or gallant crew
And from that day, my heart has bled
Beneath cold waves of turquoise blue.

The years have passed since that sad day
Her cross washed up onto this shore
And from my castle, bare and gray
I listen to the ocean's roar.

On windy nights, I've sensed her near
And in my dreams, I hear her weep
Forevermore, I'll hold her dear
And stare out to the ocean deep.
