Fairytales

I remember when I believed in fairy tales and nursery rhymes.
I used to read them a lot when I was too little to understand the lessons in them.
And by reading, I mean skimming the words just to get to the pictures.
My night light by my bed, my covers holding me tight, I'd drift off to sleep.
Completely ready for the dreams I was to have that night.
I would begin to float away, to the clouds holding the moon up high.
Then I would realize I was leaving my house, and Tinker bell was there to make me fly.
We would fly off to Never land, but then the scary dragon would come take me away
And drag me to the highest tower, and put some spell on me that made
The brightest colors, turn gray.
That's when my wishes and dreams would really start to come true.
There I would lie, each night and every day.
Waiting for someone or something.
Waiting, just waiting.
Though everyone knows I was just waiting for my knight in shining armor.
Then one day he came, but he wasn't really what I expected.
In all the stories, he was supposed to be handsome and flawless.
But this man standing in front of me was disturbing. And his hair was just a mess.
I still let him take me though. To a place where there was a tiny cottage.
A place he said his friends were, a place I was supposed to be able to hide.
We stayed there, and I found myself falling in love.
But then I would wake up, and I'd wait all day just to take out my favored books once again.
Then I would start with a new story, with a new beginning, a new twist, and a new ending.
Then I would fall asleep and go to Never land, or that tiny cottage, or the highest tower,
Or a palace with a charming beast to be my savior.
It didn't matter to what happened.
As long as I got my happy ending.
