If you had Known

by Thomas Pender   May 31, 2011

If you had known where this road would lead
Would you have stepped beyond your door
If you had known the pain at love's last end
Would you have embraced a lover's dream
If you had known the grief of loss
Would you have let affection flower
If you had known what this night would bring
Would you have rushed toward the dusk
If you had known what this dawn would bring
Would you have waited for the light
If you had known what your words would mean
Would you have held your silence
If you had known what I would bring you
Would you have stayed to see my gift
If you had known what this death would bring
Would you have spent your time believing
If...........

In this life we are plagued with 'what if's' It's a constant push and pull. To wonder what life would be like without any regrets.

We truly only understand the value of the 'what ifs' when we can no longer make up for it. When we can no longer have a 'do over'.

This poem is riddled with a sense of belonging and loss. It's almost as if I'm reaching out to hold a hand and make this person see the 'future'. I love it when poems MAKE me feel and overall cause me to think.

I really really love the use of repetition and the rhyming. The use of "If' and "would" really instills cause and effect.

Beautifully written, truly a treat. Thank you for sharing.
