Just Friends

by HealingHearts   Jun 5, 2011

I know that when you smile at me
You're just trying to relieve the pain,
But don't you realize every look
Is killing me again?

You're trying to keep your promise to me,
But this has got to end.
I've broken my part of the bargain:
We can never be "just friends.

"You're empty heart means nothing to me,"
I beat into myself each day,
But my faithless reassurance never
Eases this twisted fray.

The memory is who I love -
I know this single truth,
And the person who smiles at me
Is nothing like the old you.

You smile the same, just not as big,
Your eyes have lost the gleam
That shined with trust so powerful
And made every hater scream.

And so, my memory and I
Will live alone till the end,
Because, my perfect demon,
We can never be "just friends".
