Cannibal

by HealingHearts   Jul 16, 2011

The throbbing of the demon drums

Beat inside my head,

Forcing me onward, racing,

Tongue caught up with dread.

Stumble over rock and root,

Tears fogging vision,

Rushing blindly forward -

More instinct than decision.

Borrowed time I cannot waste,

Must keep moving - faster.

I play the animal in this act,

I am no longer master.

Phantoms race beside me,

Mocking my desperate speed.

Incessant drumming echoes,

Escape my only need.

Booming thuds propel me forward,

Deeper into darker fears,

Living an endless nightmare,

No longer welcome here.

Demon drums throb yet still,

Warning not to stay,

Push harder, run faster,

No longer master; I am prey.
