Summer Memories

by Sarah   Jun 25, 2011

As we fall deeper into the pits of Summer
The sparkles and pops of firecrackers
And the distant sounds of children and splashing water
Become frequent echoes in our ears.
We watch contently as days roll by
Carelessly enjoying our iced tea and watermelon
And spend every day in a haze of luxury.
We do not expose ourselves to the reality
That has been tinted by our overly-large sunglasses.
This is only a temporary moment of nirvana
A fleeting time that will soon end and
Fade to meer memories in the recesses of our minds
Those we hold dear will soon depart
Whether for a college, or some other venture,
And will abandon us with only the memorized
Snaps and crackles of fireworks and
The sweet flavor of watermelon on our tongues.
Until then, we are more than pleased
To stay dormant in our false perception
As long as, in our minds, this Summer never ends.

Not sure I liked the feel of "pits of summer"- I would suggest something more creative to describe the being of summer.
But I loved the imagery you portrayed here and that complex web we let go of....how we come to break away from reality, pretend it doesn't exist and that we can stay in this free summer forever...but it won't last.

Thoughtful words. keep writing and God bless!
