The First Lie

by Owner of an Untamed Heart   Aug 27, 2011

"hey, Jake." ... "How's it going ?"
... "Heard you were getting married
to the love of your life." ...
for a long time, I swore that was me
but I guess I was mistaken.

small world it is; three years later,
Jake Jr. walking with his father.
I bump into him again
with a ring on my finger.

he tells me he's happy,
but his eyes say different.
I don't ask why;
just invite him to my wedding.

he comes with his family,
except no wife.
later, I come to find out
she just walked out of their lives.

it took him a while,
until the day after my wedding,
to tell me he never really
stopped loving me.

truth is, I only settld down
to keep my mind off of Jake.
but what to do now ?
I am married to someone else !

oh, one second. "Oh, Jake, hi."
... "Um, no, I'm free." ...
"I don't think we should go
to the movies together alone."

... "Cause I don't think I'd trust
myself." ... "Okay. Just promise me
not to hug me. You know I hate feeling
intense." ... "Bye, Jake."

my husband was in the next room.
dammit, I'm married now !
I shouldn't be worrying about what
to wear when Jake comes around.

dammit, Jake, he has a hold on me.
what should I do now ?
"Honey, I'm going to movies."
"With who ?" ... "With the girls."
