Cat of Nine Tails

by Megan   Dec 28, 2011

I took my penance as my own,
I had my personal cross to bear.
I floated in a state of semi-existence,
Pretending I didn't care.
I willingly struck the match
And threw it into the pit of fire.
I let my emotions control me,
Every move was fueled by desire.
And when it all threatened to fall
To the ground beneath my feet,
I knew it was my destiny,
The warmth of your love wouldn't be mine to keep.
I let my body get run over by exhaustion,
I wouldn't let my eyes close.
I had to keep my nightmares at bay,
The horrors of which only God knows.
I couldn't just lay down and take it,
Every part of me screamed to fight.
I can't resist the urge to protect what's mine,
Even if it means I must sacrifice what's right.

There is no one I wish more happiness for,
No one whose smile means more,
No one who fills me with a love I never knew,
No one as perfect for me as you.
