Hidden Shame

by GHarriss   Apr 28, 2012

She glimpsed at her bodies' reflection and turned away in pain.
They tell her she's beautiful but her heart is filled with shame.
What do they know? (as far as she's concerned),
"Beautiful" is something that she'll never earn.

Her thighs aren't perfect and her chest isn't big,
But trust me, if she could, She'd be as skinny as a twig.
To everyone else she'll never be quite good enough,
But she's learned now that she better be tough.

So she strung together this little oath,
In hopes that someday there would be hidden growth.

"I will not allow society to dictate my life
and I refuse to let my appearance cause me anymore strife.
I don't want to be who I've become
That lost girl who looks at herself and sees only scum.

I am unique and one of a kind
And I would have realized that if I hadn't walked around blind."

Today marks the day of a brand new start
She will not tear herself up and shred her own heart.
For she awaits the day when she feels completely new
And hopefully this is a simple speed bump she can push her way through.
