Vietnam

Politicians cost the lives
Of some of the best
My generation was changed
By the war and unrest
Some joined most were drafted
To face the great risk
A few fled the country
And burned draft cards in protest
While others steppted forward
Proud to be one of the best
Off to defend our country
And oh yes the oppressed
I joined the Coast Guard
For me that was best
My friend he was drafted
And to the army he was sent
I saw him after first deployment
He seemed proud
But tired and depressed
Our friendship was strong
I think that helped his distress
Second deployment I got one letter
There was no return address
He sounded different less caring
Said war was a mess
He had been a good friend
If not my best
On the news two days later
I saw his name on,
"The Death List"

...Inspired by a lost friendship...
...Written with a pain in my heart...
