My Friend Nam

by Gary R Priester   Feb 21, 2013

A quiet young man
Sitting alone
From a different place and time
Than I had ever known
I smiled and said Hi!
I do not know why
We talked for a moment
Though his accent was hard to get by
We became lifelong friends
And forever part of each others lives
Seams time has passed quickly
Looking back through my eyes
We are both old and gray now
Entering the twilight of our lives
But I am forever thankful
That I smiled and said Hi!

Simplistic poem with a good message and hopefully a touched heart if they read it. The poem has a really good core but is not strong in some areas. The rhyming is forced in parts, which is hard to avoid without countless hours of revision. Also these types of poems are hard to make with originality so that takes away from the poem too. However, I still love the act of writing a poem for a friend as many friends really appreciate when you go out of your way to write something for them.

Your poems message holds a really good point. We should always say hello to people as we pass them by. You never know who could end up being a life long friend of a spouse one day. Always give people a try and not mention in the poem but also pertinent to the subject, smiling is a helpful way to break the ice with people throughout the day. Anyway a sweet poem for a great friend. Great job and keep writing!

Such a nice poem for a friend you made because you took the time to say hello to a stranger. We all should take the time to say hello to others, even if we don't become life long friends. I hope that you have somehow conveyed to your friend how much his friendship means. I think giving him a copy of this to read might work.
