Forever and Ever

by Sydney Pearl   Mar 13, 2013

Standing under the stars
In the stomach high grass
Hidden under the boughs
Of a weeping willow
Facing each other
He gives her a small wildflower
And kisses her cheek quickly
I'll be your best friend
He says sweetly
Forever and ever
As long as you'll be mine
Her small eyes shine
And she accepts the wildflower
With a happy smile
And whispers quietly
Best friends
Forever and ever
Ten years later
They sneak out to meet each other
Under the same stars
And the same boughs
Of the same willow
The grass now waist high
He kisses her hand
And presents her with
A beautiful red rose
We've been best friends
Forever and ever
He says with a smile
I'll be your boyfriend
Forever and ever
If you want to have me as yours
She delicately accepts the rose
And smiles at him happily
With a quick kiss on the lips
My boyfriend
Forever and ever
Ten years later
They meet again
Under those bright stars
And those secretive boughs
Of that old willow
In the grass that is now knee high
He takes her hand and smiles at her
I have been your best friend
And your boyfriend
For many years
He gets down on his knee
He takes out a beautiful ring
The small diamond reflects the stars
And he whispers quietly
Now will you be my wife
Forever and ever
The tears in her eyes
Reflect the stars also
And she happily accepts the ring
I will be your wife
Forever and ever
Years pass like seasons
They get married
Have kids
But no matter how hard life gets
Every year on their anniversary
They meet under the stars
Hidden by the willow
They sit in the grass
They hold hands like boyfriend and girlfriend
They kiss like husband and wife
And they talk like best friends
And every year on their anniversary
Before they leave to go home
He picks a wildflower
Kisses her on the cheek
Gets down on his knee
And presents her with the flower
Asking her quietly
Will you be my best friend
Forever and ever
And every year
Just like the first day
She accepts the flower
And kisses his cheek with a smile
Best friends
Forever and ever
More years pass
They grow old
One morning
She doesn't wake up
When the time comes
She is buried
On a sunny day
Under their old willow
In the tall sweet grass
Every night he sits
Under the willow
Under the stars
By her side
And every night
He presents her with a wildflower
And says quietly
I am still your best friend
Forever and ever
Days pass slowly
He grows older
Missing his best friend
One night he is too tired
To return home
So he rests his head
Beside her headstone
To take a nap
That night
Under the stars
Hidden by the boughs of the willow
Lying in the tall sweet grass
He falls asleep
And walks into the arms
Of his best friend
Forever and ever
