Goodbye to a Hero

by Sydney Pearl   Mar 13, 2013

The cold rain falls and the wind blows all around
The feet standing on the soft muddy ground.
As friends and family say their goodbye,
A teenage boy is holding tight
The flag of his father
Trying not to cry
"I must be strong
And carry on
The lessons that he taught me,
And always know that in my heart
He will never be forgotten"
Out the trumpets sing,
And around the loud shots ring,
And his fellows lead the parade
Carrying the bed down which will be laid,
Adorned with sweet smelling roses,
And also to mention, a few pretty posies.
He spent so much time away,
But had so many friends in his possession,
And on this sad rainy day,
There came quite a procession,
To send a good man on his way
To the peace that he deserves.
Being labeled as a hero
Was a title that he had earned.
With his dedication and his valor,
He would have gotten far,
But to serve was what he wanted,
And so he followed his heart.
Now his family all are weeping,
And his son stands watching somber,
His memory he will be keeping,
While the others move on and over.
This man will not be forgotten plainly,
Now we all must hope, and pray,
That he was not fighting vainly.
