The Spark

by Kt   May 1, 2013

I was raised by the sea.
The crashing of waves against immovable rocks was my lullaby.
My companions had fins instead of legs
And we frolicked amongst the tangles of seaweed.
And then I was land locked and my new friends were the hills
And the wind through the trees now soothed me.
I traded the warm waters for cool breezes
And the sand for snow.
I never learned to climb rocks but always aspired to conquer them.
I found comfort in the arms of my imagination when I felt alone.
When great sadness engulfed my thoughts,
I laid it down in using my pencil, and captured it between covers of a notebook.
Inspired by the words of my father,
I was convinced I could move mountains.
Surely I learned that dedication from him.
When everyone seemed like a magician,
My daddy was a rock.
Stayed in one place.
And always provided a stable foundation on which I could build my life.
When that building crumbled,
I felt alone picking it up.
Like I could never get it back the same.
And it never was.
I never was.
It's hard to imagine a life without sadness and pain
When that's a majority of what you've experienced.
But I've also known happiness
I've known love.
And even in the darkest room,
I've learned to create a spark.
