A Gift Horse

by Daedalus   Feb 11, 2014

I had hoped that the horseshoes of your absence
would give me stronger feet.
Instead, I am nailed to an unliving metal
that scrapes on every street.
With this prosthetic luck,
galloping south is out of the question.
I don't know how long your reigns
will remain between my teeth -
since you left, no one I've been given to
has looked me in the mouth

I'm a little biased since I love horses, but this is an awesome poem. There's expansive, and perhaps specific meaning that I'm not sure I understand, but this perfectly explains how you're taken for granted/not appreciated for your value- "no one I've been given to
has looked me in the mouth."

As I read this I could see a magnificent yet wild horse running with a heaviness in its heart. Each line is symbolic and one needs to read around it and into it for the true meaning..excellent.

    Congrats on the win :)
