If Trees could talk

by TheDarkCloudBehindthePoet   Apr 26, 2018

As a child I would always wonder,
what it would be like to talk to the trees,
climbing their giant stems,
just to get close enough to ask them questions,
only they would know,

Some old some young,
but at least 100 years older than me,
so wise and Buddha like,
tranquility flows through them,
like the water in their roots,

O wise one tell me the secrets of the world,
through your eyes you've seen it all,
and I want to know what you have seen,
What was it like when Christ walked the Earth?
What do you really think about humanity?

Just a simple conversation,
could change your life and outlook on everything,
They will tell you their truth,
and how it was back when,

From all the bloodshed they've seen,
from wars past,
to the true ugliness of humanity,
they would tell you,
everything you need to know.

interesting concept for a poem. If the tree was left alone long enough it would be great to talk and listen to what it had witnessed.
Here in England we have a tree that is at least 2000 years old.

    details here

    The Ankerwycke yew

There may be yew trees in Britain that are older but the 31-ft wide yew ( Taxus baccata) found in the ruined priory of Ankerwycke in Berkshire has witnessed at least 2,000 years of history and myth-making. It is said to have been the spot where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 and is rumoured to be where Henry VIII conducted his first liaisons with Anne Boleyn.

This reminds me of "The Street" by H.P. Lovecraft. He describes what the street has witnessed, though did not understand, from the time it was a dirt road, through the industrial age, through the world war.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I would check the last line, is "they" a typo?

It was a typo lol I've changed it now. Thank you for liking my poem. I'll have to read "The Street" and see comparisons and how it's written. Thank you for the love.
