A girl name Sharon

by KAZ ISHMAEL   Jul 27, 2019

The taxi pulls up in front of our house
And we saw Doreen came out holding a baby
And she came to our front gate
We were surprised to see her because she lives in Mayaro by her sister Savitri

We know that she and her husband Phillip and her sister from Mayaro
When my brother Tazim use to work at point Galeotoa
He rented a little house there and we become friends with the other people who lived there in the village

Then when he stopped working there
We stop going to that area again
Because there was no use too
He moved back to our home in Ste Madeleine.

So we surprised to see Doreen at our home
We knew that she was pregnant
And now she had the baby,
But why was she by us in Ste Madeleine.?

She asks for my mother .when she saw me
And I went inside and told my mother that Doreen from Mayaro was here to see her
My mother and grandmother were surprised
I mean, why would Doreen come to our home to ask for them

So they told me to carry the dog in the back
And then they told her to come upstairs to the gallery.
When she came.she told my mother,
That she needs a favor.
He has to go to the doctor
And if they could see the baby " name Sharon" until she goes to the San Fernando hospital clinic to see the doctor and come back.

My mother said ok.
She would see the baby
But please come back as soon as she can
How they have to go to the mosque
Because they are fasting
Doreen she ok.she won't take long
But she never came back again
Until the one-week-old baby was around 5 years old

The evening came and we all sat in the gallery
Thinking that she, maybe running late but would eventually come for her child
My grandmother says, that maybe she is really sick
And they might give kept her in the ward

Then the next day I went to work by Ram Mohess tailoring establishment
And came in the evening and saw my mother rocking the baby
And I thought to myself
She abandons the baby by us and she is not coming back

My mother still believes that she was sick in the hospital and wouldn't leave her child
The week ended and she still didn't come back
And at first, we boys were kind of upset to have this baby by us crying and we just didn't want a baby in our home
especially a strangers baby crying all hour of the night

After the first week past my parents then realize that she had abandoned the baby
And was not coming back for her
So my parents hired a taxi driver from next door to us to name Frank Badree, to take them to Mayaro, and my parents and grandmother and brother Tazim went to look for her

When they reach by her sisters home
they came out and take the baby with them
And call out to them, they refuse to come out, Doreen look through the window and told them that she doesn't want to the child and she closes the window and no one came out
So my parents took the child to the police station in Mayaro and told them what happen,

The police said that there is nothing they can do
And if the mother doesn't want the child
The child would have to be put in an orphanage
So the police said that they would go and talk to the mother
And she told them that she can't afford to keep the child

The Mayaro police talk to the Ste Madeleine police and ask them to come and talk to us
And it was either we keep the child or we take the child to the orphanage
And leave the child

I remember we all talking in the gallery one night
And the child started to cry, and I think " this poor kid. she was brought in this world and now she was just alone and will grow up in an orphan home
And I went and pick up the child and I felt like if she was my baby sister at that moment

And I know parents and grandmother
Was put in a very daunting and exhausting situation,
But they would never turn their backs on anyone who needed help. and there was no way they were going to turn their back on an innocent little helpless baby

So they decided to keep the child and minded her as if she was their own
Taking care of a newborn baby is an exhausting and tiring thing, to wake all hour of the night why the baby cries .feeding her, changing her, rocking her to make her sleep

Knowing when she is sick or not feeling well by feeling her forehead to know if she has a fever
It was a tough job and my parents and grandmother did it for this child for five (5) years, we loved this child as our sister and they loved this child as their own.

I remember holding her hands and walking her to the parlor to buy her candy and cookies and chocolate
The child becomes a part of lives and we forgot about how she did come to us that day, a baby a few days old and her mother abandons her by our home,

We were all just going about life normally, you know the regular, going to work, playing football and cricket, going to our vegetation garden in the back of Corinth in Simson's land.
And the child and my last brother Azad was about the same age, maybe just a few years difference, so she uses to be around him most of the time, playing and talking to him, she was a real chatterbox

Then one day, it was a clear and sunny day, the breeze was blowing through the trees,
The birds were singing and flying about on our dodoes mango tree right next to our gallery, and we were all sitting in the gallery, then we saw Doreen walking down the street,
We all were like " what the hell is she doing here.

She came and ask to come, that she want to talk to us, we were mad as hell to see her, but my parents said ok and they let her come into the yard and the gallery,
Then said that her husband gets a good permanent job now and they move from Mayaro and they living by his parent's house in Tarouba
right to the end of the playground where they do have the Ramdilla, and how they want the child back, " could you believe the nerve of this uncaring and selfish woman who abandons a newborn and didn't wanted her and wanted us to give the child to an orphanage " now she comes after we take care of this child, love this child and make this child a part of our home and lives and now she wants us to give her back to her,

My parents said, no she cannot have the child, that he is a part of our family our hearts and our lives
That she abandon this child and wanted to the child to live as an orphan, I was right looking at them and I told her that no this child is not leaving, then she left and gone to the police and said we have her child and she is the mother and have the birth paper to proof it and we are keeping her child

The mistake my parents made, was not getting her to sign adoption papers that we have adopted this child
She came with the police and we told the police the hold story and what she did from the first day she dropped the baby off by us,
And the police told us to talk a lawyer and to see if we have any rights to keep the child,
And that she has to do the same thing because they have the last report that she didn't want the child, but no adoption papers were signed

My parents try to keep this child at all cost
They went to court and they did their best, but at the end of the day, the thing against is was that we couldn't show adopting papers that the mother sign over that child to us
The Court said that we have to give back the child, by a certain date, we took care of this child from one week old until she was five years old, cared and love this child as a daughter and sister and now we have to give her, we were the only parent she knew, the only people in her. life and now she will give to people who are strangers to her.

It was a very sad time in our home knowing that we had to give up this child. and I couldn't stop feeling the empathy that the child would feel to realize that she feels being with strangers and living in a strange home and missing us.
The day reach when my parents and grandmother was going to take her back to them with frank Badree car, and Sharon was her happy self, playing laughing and joyful, we did tell her that she was going to live by some other people and try to get her to understand it, but how do you get a five years child to understand that?

We hug her and cried to her get in the car happy, and not knowing that she was leaving the only home she knows that only people that she knew was her family
It's a day I would never forget.
, when my parents took her, there were some other children there and she started playing with them and Doreen the that they could come to see her anytime

But the next week when they went back .she didn't let them see the child .she said that Sharon keeps asking to go home and asking for sugar boy, how she wants to go home to play with sugar boy,
And they don't want them to see the child again, it broke our hearts and we were helpless and could see the child again

Then the years keep coming and we all got caught up in it, working looking towards the future and we always kept Sharon in our hearts and I wish that I had tried to get in contact with her years ago. its something I regret not doing
When father was sick and I and my brother Tazim came to see him from new york in 2004 at the airport in Trinidad, I saw Tazim talking to a guy and then the guy was gone and Tazim comes and told me that, that was Sharon father Phillip and I told him, why didn't you call me or get his number and ask him about Sharon.

I have a facebook friend who lives in Tarouba and I was telling her about Sharon and where they live by the ground and she told me about a Doreen with a daughter name Sharon she knows, but when she asked her, she says no she doesn't about it

And I have another friend from the 3rd street in Ste Madeleine and she has a friend who hangs out in Tarouba and she would find out about it. and she did get a lot of information from her friends
And they talk about the same person my other friend told me about

They said that the girl Sharon got married and her married name is Dharam and how she lives in Canada now.
I don't know if it's the same child that we are talking about, but it could be her and I hope that she is happy and having a good life, I hope that one day we can get in contact with her again and tell her about my grandmother and parents and how much they loved her and about the family that she never knew

Her mother name is Doreen
And Doreen has a sister name Savitri living in Mayaro, who use to sell pepper and other vegetables in front of the San Fernando market across the street from the old new cinema
Her father name is Phillip
And I remember my brother saying that his last was Bagaboo, I think
And Phillip had a brother living in Mamoral village think his name is Frances

I hope that maybe anyone who reads this.may recognizes her pictures from when she was five years
And might have some information about her or might even be a close friend or a family or a neighbor or even her children
Hope to all is well with her and hope to hear from her soon
